Absolutely. Munich’s U-Bahn (subway), S-Bahn (urban rail), tramways, and buses are safe and reliable. They are used by families, students, and elderly people at all hours of the day.

A few quick notes:

• Late at night: You might encounter intoxicated people on weekends, especially around the Main Station (Hauptbahnhof). They’re usually harmless, but try to avoid them anyway (go away or if encountered in a train, change cars).
• Security personnel: Many stations have security staff and emergency call buttons.
• Night trams and buses: On weekends, Munich runs so called “night trams” and “night buses” when the subway stops operating early in the morning (see below). These night trams/night buses are well-used and safe.
• The U-Bahn and S-Bahn operate until around 1 AM (and again from around 4 AM) on weekdays and 24 hours on weekends (Fri/Sat nights).

My personal tip: If you’re taking the U-Bahn alone late at night, try to sit in the first car near the driver. This is a common safety tip used by locals, too.

This one is a bit specific, but important. Around the S-Bahn station “Donnersbergerbrücke” in the Neuhausen-Nymphenburg district, you’ll find a cluster of hotels: Novotel, ibis, Citadines, and a few others. These are in or around the sub-quarter “Arnulfpark”.

On paper, this looks very convenient—it’s just west of the city center and seems close to the Oktoberfest grounds. But in practice, this area has some serious drawbacks:

What’s the problem?

• It feels isolated: Despite being technically close to the center, the area around Donnersbergerbrücke is a mix of railway tracks, office buildings, and busy roads. It lacks the cozy neighborhood feel you’d get just a few blocks further northwest in Neuhausen.
• Gritty at night: The underpasses and streets around the station can feel sketchy after dark. It’s not dangerous per se, but it’s not pleasant either.
• Oktoberfest crowds: These hotels primarily exist to house Oktoberfest visitors, and during the festival season. Outside of Oktoberfest, it feels oddly empty.

Better alternative: Stay around Rotkreuzplatz (Neuhausen) instead. It’s only a 10 to 15-minute walk away but offers a vibrant neighborhood with fantastic restaurants, cafés, and a weekly market.

The question many visitors ask is: why does it cost money in the first place? The answer lies in how Germany approaches public infrastructure and services.

In many countries, public toilets are funded by municipal taxes and maintained by city workers. While Germany certainly has municipally maintained restrooms, the reality is that keeping toilets clean, vandalism-free, and well-stocked is expensive. Public budgets are often tight, and when they are cut, public toilets are among the first services to suffer. The result? Dirty, unsafe, and unpleasant facilities that nobody wants to use.

Germany’s solution has been to privatize or semi-privatize toilet maintenance—but with strict oversight. Private companies like Sanifair operate the facilities under contract with the city or railway authority. The user fee covers cleaning, maintenance, security, and ongoing investment in new technology. This means the toilets are actually better maintained than many tax-funded alternatives elsewhere.

Consider this: a paid toilet in Germany is often cleaner than a free public toilet in many other countries. The fee creates accountability and ensures that someone is responsible for keeping the space in good condition.

If you’re visiting a continental European city, whether it’s Munich, Paris, Barcelona, or anywhere in between, I’d encourage you to lean into the local breakfast culture rather than defaulting to whatever feels familiar. Skip the hotel buffets of international hotel chains at least once and find a neighbourhood bakery instead. Order what the locals are ordering, even if it seems modest. Take your time without feeling guilty about it.
Watch the hustele and bustle of rush hour and feel like a local.
Don’t chomp down your roll or pretzel like you’re having no time. Sit back, enjoy every bite and try to feel what is on your roll, feel the texture in your mouth, the maybe different taste and smell of coffee and relax.

What you’ll discover, I think, is that breakfast in continental Europe offers a genuine window into how people here want to live—with attention, with pleasure, with connection to tradition and to each other. It’s a small daily act of resistance against the pressure to rush through life without tasting it properly.

• Best Time to Visit/take photos: Sunny days in the late afternoon / early evening for warm tones and sunset vibes. Best photo angles are From Ludwigstraße looking north with the arch centered. 
  Be aware, that Siegestor stands in the middle of a busy arterial road.  It can sometimes be difficult to take photos without cars. If you like to shoot a pro-photo, try going there after 10 p.m. when streets are getting empty.

As it is quite easy to catch a cold especially during the winter season, as a traveller you should avoid large crowds like festivals (Oktoberfest, Christmas Markets, packed public transport) or flights. Where lot’s of people come toghether, you are usually exposed to viruses and bacteria.
But as a tourist, you somehow come for such events and you often also can’t just avoid your flight to Munich.

To be honest you can’t really avoid catching a common cold. But you can try to boost your immune system. Additionally you can take some precautions to minimize the chance of getting a cold.
Here are my five tips for avoiding a cold when on route to Munich:

• Two weeks before your flight or departure to Munich, eat healthy. Lots of vegetables, less fast food and less sweets.
• Additionally get some vitamins from your local pharmacy. Also supermarkets sell immune booster products.
• Fly long-haul like a pro: Have a scarf, thick socks, an additional jacket, and long trousers with you or in your hand luggage. Trust me, no matter how hot it is in Munich or at your home destination. After four hours at 18 C /64 F you will feel chilled and at least another 4 hours are still to come. The chance to catch a cold is now very high.
• Avoid ice cold beverages three days before and three days after your journey to Munich. This one is more a legend , because cold beverages do not cause a cold. But it keeps you alerted to avoid cooling down your body more than you should.
• Wash your hands regularly. Also have hand sanitizer with you and use it regularly.

HBF is the abbreviation for Hauptbahnhof (engl. main station). You will find this abbreviation on public transport vehicles en route to a main or central station. For example Munich Main Station (“München Hbf.”).
