If you’re visiting Bavaria in mid-August, you might notice that August 15 is a public holiday in many cities and towns. This day, known as Assumption Day (Mariä Himmelfahrt in German), offers a distinctive opportunity to experience local traditions and festivities.

What Is Assumption Day?

Assumption Day commemorates the belief in the bodily assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. While not explicitly detailed in the Bible, this doctrine was declared a dogma by Pope Pius XII in 1950. The day holds significant importance in the Catholic Church and is celebrated with various religious and cultural events. As Bavaria is still quite catholic, it is a public holiday in certain towns and cities, which means all shops are closed like on a sunday.

Where Is It a Public Holiday?

In Bavaria, Assumption Day is a public holiday in municipalities where the majority of the population is Catholic. This weird rule, leads to the fact, that for example in Munich, Augsburg, Regensburg and Würzburg, it is a public holiday. In the cities of Nuremberg and Erlangen, it is not. And to make it even more complicated, it can happen, that the majority by census changes from year to year.

Traditions and Festivities

On August 15th there is a specific church service in many cities and towns, often accompanied by traditional music and community gatherings. Many towns also host religious processions. A cherished tradition involves gathering bouquets of herbs and flowers which are then blessed during church services. People belive, these blessed herbs bring protection and health to their homes.

What Should Tourists Know?

In areas where Assumption Day is celebrated (for example in Munich), expect shops, banks and public services to be closed. The same rules as on sundays apply.

Public transport operates, but on a holiday schedule, so better check the local timetables in advance if you plan to use public transport.

Assumption Day provides a window into the rich tapestry of Bavarian culture. Whether you’re witnessing a procession, enjoying the aroma of blessed herbs, or simply soaking in the festive atmosphere, it’s a day that offers memorable experiences for travelers.
