Munich, known for its traditional Bavarian dishes like hearty Schweinshaxe (pork knuckles) and pretzels, might not be the first place that comes to mind when you think of Mexican food. However, the city’s culinary scene is surprisingly diverse, and for those craving a taste of the Americas, a fantastic burrito is never far away – at least in the inner city of Munich. Whether you’re a local or just visiting, finding that perfect combination of juicy fillings, fresh salsa, and warm tortilla can be a delightful quest.
I love Burritos and I’m always thrilled when finding a real good burrito shop in the USA.Â
Therefore, I made a guide to my Munich’s top spots for delicious burritos (and Mexican food):
My Top Burrito Destinations in Munich
If you ask a Munich local where to get a burrito, 8 out of 10 times they will say “at Condesa.” With locations at Münchner Freiheit and near Hauptbahnhof, Condesa is the go-to spot for a reason. They started with a small shop and a mission: to bring real mexican flavors (not europeanized recipes) to Munich. And boom – Condesa made it to the top of Mexican food venues in the city. Of course Condesa is less a sit in restaurant to have a Mexican feast, but more the quick stop by for great Burritos, Nachos or a stop to start your weekend evening with really good Margaritas.
Now they expanded to three stores in Munich. The concept stayed the same. Burritos, Quesadillas and Tacos. They prepare different fillings.
1. Condesa
My Favorite Item
The Burrito “Al Pastor”, with slow cooked pork.
Prices
Prices are quite reasonable. You pay around 12 Euros (approx 14. USD) including all taxes for a burrito and 8 Euros (approx. 9.50 USD) for a margarita.
Good to know
- They serve Jarritos lemonades.
- You can choose how hot the burrito should be. You can choose between hotness level 0 (zero hot) and 4 (very very hot). Level 3 is marked as “Mexican” 🙂
- They have three different locations. The “original” next to Munich’s Main Station, the one at Münchner Freiheit in Schwabing district (also a touristy corner of Munich) and the one in Sendling district, a residential area with barely any tourist sights.
2. Pureburrito
Having six stores in Munich, Pureburrito focuses on high-quality, healthy ingredients without sacrificing flavor. They were the first I checked out as they copied a bit the type and system of the well known (and in Germany not available – except for Frankfurt) chain Chipotle. You order at the counter and the Burroto is prepared directly in front of you. You can choose the ingredients during the preparation process. They are particularly famous for their homemade marinades and a good variety of vegetarian and vegan options. They offer also two sizes of Burrito (small and large), which can be helpful if you just want a small bite and not a complete regular sized Burrito. I would say the “large” one is more like a “regular” one.
My Favourite Item
Large Burrito with Barbacoa, brown rice, black beans, salad, sour cream and the extra hot “vonDerRolle” salsa.
Prices
Prices are good. You pay around 10-12 Euros (approx 13-15 USD) including all taxes for a burrito.
Good to know
- If you are used to the Chipotle-chain in the USA, you will feel at home here.
- You can “create” your own Burrito, or you choose one of the “pre-made” recipes.
- The have great salsas to choose from. Be aware that their hottest salsa “vonDerRolle” is extremely hot and only for lovers of spicy food.
- They serve Jarritos lemonades
- They have six stores in Munich numbered in roman numbers I – VI.
3. Burrito Company
Another burrito chain with two stores in Munich (Maxvorstadt district, Glockenbach district) is frequently praised for its fresh ingredients and customizable options. They offer a reliable and satisfying experience for a quick and tasty meal. It’s a great choice for a budget-friendly yet flavorful burrito. I tried it and what can I say it’s good, but I would say the one from pureburrito has more taste). I love the design of the store and they also offer a small “Schanigarten” (a small seating area in the street) at their Glockenbach-district store.
To be honest, this chain mixes a bit mexican flavours with US-style items. They therefore also do not advertise as “authentic Mexican” but say they sell “California Burritos, Bowls, Salads and more”, so they have a bit different target group than Condesa and pureburrito.
My Favourite Item
Burrito with Chili Cheese Beef
Prices
Prices are ok. You pay around 13 Euros (approx 15 USD) including all taxes for a burrito.
Good to know
- they have good veggie options like Seitan or pumpkin falafel
