The flagship carrier of Germany with many nonstop connections to the US. The big plus here is, that Lufthansa and United Airlines are both members of the Star Alliance and are cooperating very good. Here are the perks flying with Lufthansa:

  • Cooperates with United Airlines so if something goes wrong (delays), you often may change to a United flight free of charge
  • Uses the huge and modern Terminal 2 "Lufthansa Terminal" of Munich Airport (MUC)
  • Covers many destinations with nonstop flights (see below)
  • Has decent lounges in Munich (MUC) and the US
  • Sometimes uses old machines (I'm looking at you 747) and worn interior
  • Frequent travellers report, service is "hit or miss" depending on the crew
  • Can be struck by strikes in Germany (especially during spring)

United Airlines

One of the big players in the USA.  It cooperates with Lufthansa in the Star Alliance network. Here are the perks flying with United Airlines:

The small sister of Lufthansa, a known face for Germans and Europeans as Discover usually is used for budget flights within Europe, especially to vacation destinations like Greece, Spain or Italy. Since 2025 they try to get a piece of the cake operating nonstop flights to Orlando (see my Article about the quite new route). Here are the perks flying with United Airlines:

  • Ideal for Floridians
  • Uses the huge and modern Terminal 2 "Lufthansa Terminal" of Munich Airport (MUC)
  • Business Class guests may use Lufthansa Business Lounges
  • Has often cheaper rates than Lufthansa or United Airlines.
  • Uses an Airbus A330-300 for a long haul flight
  • Has no lounge in Orlando (MCO)
  • Uses the dated (but at least refurbished) Lufthansa seats

As you can see, the USA is quite good connected to Munich and Bavaria. Sometimes Airlines also test out routes to less big airports. For example we saw a nonstop connection from Frankfurt (FRA) to Austin, TX (AUS). So keep your eyes open to news like my announcement about the Orlando route.

My Tips for Booking Your Nonstop Flight

Here are a few things I have learned from traveling the Munich-US route many times:

  1. Book early for summer. June through September is peak season in Munich with the top around Oktoberfest (mid-September until early October). Demand is very high. Book at least 2–3 months ahead, better 4-6 months.
  2. Check the aircraft type. Lufthansa uses the modern and comfortable Airbus A380 on routes like LAX and SFO. The A380 is quieter and more spacious. If you are a tall person, I recommend a seat on the upper deck in Economy. Unfortunately Lufthansa can make changes anytime. So to check the plane type, you can use the registration numbers. Only these registration numbers are Lufthansa A380s: D-AIMA, D-AIMB, D-AIMC, D-AIMH, D-AIMK, D-AIML, D-AIMM, D-AIMN.
  3. Consider the time of day. Most US-to-Munich flights leave in the late afternoon or evening (US time) and arrive in Munich the next morning. This is ideal: you arrive in the morning (maybe after a sleep on the plane), drop your bags at the hotel, and start exploring.
  4. Join a loyalty program. If you fly Lufthansa or United, consider joining Miles & More or MileagePlus. Even if you do not fly often, the points add up quickly on transatlantic routes. Same is for American Airlines and Delta. Sometimes US-banks offer credit cards for new customers with many points/miles you can use.
  5. Check for seasonal routes. Some routes (for example MIA) are only available during a couple of months. If you are traveling outside of this season, you may have to connect.
