Have good shoes. The best way to hike is by using hikung shoes. Here, you don’t have to bring your high altitude mountain boots, but I recommend hiking shoes with good grip such as trail running shoes.

Bring a small daypack. Especially when you do this hike with children, bring a packpack, so you have water, snacks and maybe toys with you.

Consider the time of day. It is possible to hike up to Neureuther Hütte for sunset, but be aware that you also have to hike down. It gets really dark inside the forest, so bring a headlamp or a torchlight when you plan to see the sunset (or sunrise).

Remember the train timetable. When you arrive by train and you want to go back to Munich with the train, remember the train timetable and be at the station on time. No worries, if you did not catch your train. Usually there is an hourly connection. But do not miss the last train (around 10:30 pm).

Check for seasonal routes. Some routes (for example MIA) are only available during a couple of months. If you are traveling outside of this season, you may have to connect.

If you look at the building, you might think, it was built in medieval times. But it’s just the Neo-Gothic architecture style. The construction of the New Town Hall began in 1867 and took over 40 years to complete, finally reaching its full splendor by 1909. Designed by Georg von Hauberrisser, the building was necessitated by the rapid growth of Munich in the 19th century, which outgrew the Old Town Hall’s capacity.

At the time of its completion, the New Town Hall was a testament to Munich’s burgeoning importance and wealth. Hauberrisser’s design seamlessly integrates historical Bavarian elements with grand Gothic features, creating a building that feels both ancient and majestically new. Its elaborate facade tells stories of Bavarian rulers, saints, and allegorical figures, providing a visual chronicle of the region’s past.

Step onto Marienplatz, and the New Town Hall immediately captures your attention. Its sheer size and the wealth of detail are astounding.

One of the most striking features is the facade, adorned with hundreds of statues, gargoyles, and reliefs. These depict important figures from Bavarian history, including dukes, kings, and legendary characters, as well as allegorical representations of civic virtues. Take your time to examine the intricate stonework; you’ll discover something new with every glance.

The main tower, standing at 85 meters, offers a fantastic panoramic view of Munich. A lift takes visitors almost to the top, providing breathtaking views over the city, Marienplatz, and on clear days, all the way to the Alps. The climb to the viewing platform is an absolute must for photographers and anyone wanting to grasp the scale of Munich’s historic center.

Inside, the building houses numerous impressive rooms. While many are used for administrative purposes, some, like the Grand Council Chamber and the Legal Library, can be admired for their ornate decoration and historical ambiance. The Prunkhof (Courtyard of Honor) often hosts events and offers a quieter retreat from the bustling Marienplatz. Must see here: The Wendeltreppe (Spiral Stairs)

Housed in the central tower, this mechanical clock comes to life daily at 11 AM and 12 PM, and from March to October, also at 5 PM.

The Glockenspiel features 43 bells and 32 life-sized figures that re-enact two famous events from Munich’s history: the tournament held for the marriage of Duke Wilhelm V and Renata of Lorraine in 1568, and the Schäfflertanz (Coopers’/Barrel Makers’ Dance). The latter is said to have originated in 1517, when coopers danced through the streets to lift the spirits of the population after a plague epidemic, showing them it is safe to go outside. The entire show lasts approx. 15 minutes. Four different songs can be heard, but unfortunately due to weather, and the influence of war (bombing) and time, you have to listen very close to recognize the different songs.

It’s a charming and nostalgic spectacle that draws crowds to Marienplatz, creating a truly communal experience. Arrive a bit early to secure a good spot! Especially during summer, the square gets filled with tourists.

Opened in 2007, you can say BMW Welt (BMW World) is an architectural wonder. The building’s flowing, sculptural form with its iconic double-cone structure and sweeping glass façade creates a sense of motion even while standing still. The interior is equally breathtaking, with open spaces flooded with natural light, suspended walkways, and a design that seamlessly blends form and function. You feel like in a futuristic city. When outside, you will easily think you are standing in front of a spaceship.

The building itself has won numerous architectural awards and stands as a symbol of innovation and forward-thinking design. Adjacent to the historic BMW headquarters (the famous “Four Cylinders” building) and the BMW Museum (a silver bowl that is the BMW logo when seen from above), BMW Welt completes a trio of landmarks that celebrate the brand’s past, present, and future (see article photo at the beginning).

The main attraction is the exhibition area, where the latest BMW, MINI, and Rolls-Royce vehicles are displayed in a setting that feels more like an art gallery than a showroom. You can walk freely among the cars, sit inside some models, and experience the latest automotive technology up close. Interactive displays allow you to customize your dream car, explore engine technology, and learn about sustainable mobility and electric vehicles.

One of the most unique experiences at BMW Welt is witnessing the vehicle delivery ceremony. Every day, customers from around the world come to collect their new BMW in a theatrical handover ritual. Watching cars descend on platforms from the upper floors while proud owners celebrate is truly special – it’s where automotive dreams literally come to life.

Through hands-on workshops and interactive exhibits, young visitors can learn about mobility, sustainability, and technology in an engaging, age-appropriate way. Kids can even design their own virtual cars and participate in various educational activities.

For those seeking deeper insights, the guided tours (available in German and English for 16 EUR / 19 USD per person) offer behind-the-scenes access and fascinating stories about BMW’s history, innovation, and vision for the future. Tours typically last about an hour and provide context that enriches the entire experience.

Don’t miss the BMW Museum next door (separate admission required!), which takes you on a chronological journey through BMW’s illustrious history, from its beginnings as an aircraft engine manufacturer to becoming one of the world’s premier automotive brands. The museum’s bowl-shaped architecture and innovative exhibition design make it a perfect complement to BMW Welt.

You have two main options to get there, both offering stunning views along the way:

The Zugspitze Cable Car (Seilbahn Zugspitze) – This is the fastest and most scenic way to reach the top. Departing from the Eibsee (a lake near the town of garmisch-Partenkirchen), the cable car takes you to the summit in just 10 minutes while offering uninterrupted panoramic views of the Bavarian Alps. It’s a breathtaking ride and perfect for those who want to enjoy the scenery without too much effort.

The Bavarian Zugspitze Railway (Zugspitzbahn) – If you prefer a more traditional alpine journey, this cogwheel train departs from Garmisch-Partenkirchen and takes you up to the Zugspitzplatt, a station just below the summit. From there, a short glacier cable car ride takes you to the very top. This option is great for travelers who want to enjoy a longer, more scenic ascent. Also for train and railway enthusiasts this cogwheel train is to prefer as it runs since more than 90 years to the Zugspitze.

For the truly adventurous, there’s also the option to hike up—but be warned, this is a challenging full-day trek and should only be attempted by very experienced mountaineers.

It is often a bit confusing how to reach the top, because on the summit, there is the border between Austria and Germany. And also on the Austrian side, there is a cable car from the Austrian town of Ehrwald to the summit. To distinguish between the different cable cars, they are named differently:

Bayerische Zugspitzbahn (Bavarian Zugspitze Cable Car)

Tiroler Zugspitzbahn (Tyrolean Zugspitze Cable Car)

Gletscherbahn (Glacier Cable Car)

The Bavarian Zugspitze Cable Car, the Clacier Cable Car and the Cogwheel train operate on the German side of the border, while the Tyrolean Cable Car opertates on the Austrian side of the Zugspitze.

Start your adventure right in the heart of Munich at Marienplatz, the city’s most famous square. Grab a coffee from one of the nearby cafés and find a good spot to watch the Glockenspiel performance at 11 AM or 12 PM. The charming mechanical figures reenact historical Bavarian events, and while it might sound touristy, it’s actually a delightful way to begin your trip.

The Glockenspiel has two different shows on two balconies. The first balcony shows a medieval joust, held on Marienplatzin the 16th century. The second balcony shows the dance of the barrel makers (Schäffler). The legend has it, that they were the first people in Munich who came out after the bubonic plague and danced in the streets, to encourage people also to come out as the plague was over.

From here, wander through the Old Town (Altstadt), passing by architectural marvels like the New Town Hall (Neues Rathaus) and the Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus). If you’re a history buff, a quick visit to St. Peter’s Church is a must—the oldest church in Munich offers an incredible panoramic view of the city from its tower (open for public; for a small fee you can climb the approx. 350 steps to the caged open platform at the top. be advised, that the staircase is narrow and steep. Not recommended for people with fear of small rooms and heights).

The market is open daily from around 8 a.m. to around 8 p.m, except sundays and Christmas Eve/New Years Eve.. Each trader that owns a stall at Viktualenmarket can set thir openeing hours individually.

Make sure to grab a fresh pretzel with Obatzda (a creamy cheese spread), or try a traditional Weißwurst (white sausage) with sweet mustard and a pretzel. If the weather is nice, sit down in the official Viktualienmarket beer garden at the center of the market and enjoy a Maß (one liter mug) of Augustiner beer—a favorite among locals. Viktualienmarkt is foodies heaven. If you dare, you can also try a horse-bratwurst, a roasted sausage made of horse meat, as Viktuelenmarkt also features a horse butcher.

After lunch, take a short stroll to the Munich Residenz, north of Marienplatz, the former royal palace of Bavarian kings. The lavishly decorated rooms, grand halls, and the stunning Antiquarium will transport you back in time. If you’re a fan of opulence, the Treasury inside the Residenz is well worth a visit—it houses priceless jewels and artifacts.

The Royal Residence is a state museum. You can buy ticklets to see the rooms and the treasury. Plan with about 2 hours to see everything.

Shorcut: If you’re in a hurry or not a big fan of museums, you can also visit some areas for free which are good photo opportunities:

Kaiserhof (Imperial Courtyard)

Apothekenhof (Apothecary Courtyard)

Kapellenhof (Chapel Courtyard)

Kabinettsgarten (Cabinet Garden) <– special tip!

Hofgarten (Royal Court)

Once you’ve explored the Residenz, step outside to Odeonsplatz, one of Munich’s most picturesque squares. The grand Feldherrnhalle (field marshals’ hall), inspired by Florence’s Loggia dei Lanzi, stands as a monument to Bavaria’s military history. You can see the statues of two Bavarian field marshalls – Duke Tilly and Duke Wrede. The heraldic animal of Bavaria, the lion is also present as well as a statue to honor the Bavarian army. On the opposite side, the Theatine Church with its striking yellow façade adds a Mediterranean touch to the scene. If you’re in the mood for a break, grab a coffee at the charming Café Tambosi, one of the city’s oldest cafés, and enjoy the elegant surroundings.

For a relaxing detour, walk through the Hofgarten, a beautifully manicured park right next to the Residenz. This peaceful oasis is the perfect spot to rest your feet while listening to street musicians performing under the central temple. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a game of bocce being played by locals—one of the many small details that make Munich so charming.

No trip to Bavaria is complete without visiting Neuschwanstein Castle, the breathtaking inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle. Nestled in the foothills of the Alps, this 19th-century masterpiece was built by King Ludwig II, often called the “Fairy Tale King” or the “Crazy King” for his extravagant architectural visions. The castle’s romantic turrets, grand halls, and dreamy mountain backdrop make it one of Germany’s most iconic but also most touristy sights.

Make sure you book your tickets weeks before your visit or join a tour bus from Munich, which I recommend, so you don’t have to mess around with train and bus tickets to get there. Guided tours of the castle interior provide a fascinating glimpse into Ludwig’s eccentric mind, but even just admiring the exterior and soaking in the alpine scenery is worth the journey. If you have extra time, explore Hohenschwangau Castle, Ludwig’s childhood home, located just down the hill.

For those looking for a more reflective and historical experience, the Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site is a very moving visit. Located just a short train ride from Munich, Dachau was the first Nazi concentration camp, established in 1933. Today, it stands as a memorial and documentation center, offering visitors an in-depth look at one of history’s darkest periods.

Walking through the site, you’ll see the preserved barracks, the main gate with the infamous inscription “Arbeit macht frei”, and the solemn memorial chapels. The exhibition provides detailed historical context, with personal accounts, photographs, and artifacts that ensure the stories of the victims are never forgotten. While it’s a sobering experience, it’s an important one for anyone wanting to understand Munich’s full history.

If you’re craving a more relaxing day, head to Lake Starnberg, just 30 minutes from Munich by train. This idyllic lake, surrounded by charming villages and Alpine views, is a favorite escape for locals looking to unwind. It’s also historically significant—King Ludwig II mysteriously drowned here in 1886, and his memorial site can be visited in the town of Berg.

You can rent a boat, take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear waters, or enjoy a lakeside meal at one of the traditional Bavarian restaurants. If you’re up for a leisurely bike ride, a scenic cycling path circles the lake, offering spectacular views at every turn. Starnberg is a perfect place to slow down and experience the laid-back, elegant side of Bavarian life.

My special tip if you want to have a relaxing day: Take a boat ride on lake Starnberg. From late April to mid October, there are regular boat rides with boats that offer sun decks and drinks/snacks. Sit in the sun while taking the “Grand Tour”, a nearly 4 hour boat ride with many possibilities to take stunning pictures.

See https://www.seenschifffahrt.de/en/lake-starnberg/ for more information, timetables and ticket prices.
