The Eurostars Grand Central Munich hotel belongs to the Eurostars hotel chain. This chain is especially common for people who travel to Spanish-speaking countries like Spain, Argentina, or Mexico. The company is based in Barcelona, Spain.

There are two Eurostars hotels in Munich, all within walking distance of Munich’s main train station. For longer stays, there is also the possibility to stay in one of 10 apartments. All rooms are very modern and elegantly furnished. Especially the en-suite bathrooms are in black and red and offer an amazing look. All rooms are air-conditioned and have a minibar, safe, hairdryer, radio and a flat-screen TV.

Of course, wi-fi is available free of charge throughout the hotel. Bathroom amenities (miniature bottles) are also provided free of charge. They come from the company “Hierbas de Ibiza”. Here you can obviously see that this is a Spanish hotel chain.

The very spacious 24/7 reception area is also modern and centrally located. To the right of the reception area are the lifts to the rooms and access to the event rooms. To the left of the reception is the access to the lounge/bar and the breakfast room or restaurant.

Restaurant/food facilities

Right next to the reception area is the entrance to the lounge with a bar, called “The Corner”. Immediately afterward the restaurant “Red” opens up, which is also used for breakfast. Here you can also have lunch and dinner.

The meals are international with some Spanish options. Breakfast can either be added when booking a room (higher room rate) or can be booked separately at the reception.

The price for breakfast is 25.00 EUR per person and day (as of 06/2026) when booked on site.

There are numerous meeting rooms in the hotel in every imaginable size. All of them are located on the ground floor, near the reception. An appropriate catering service is available.

Parking

Parking for cars is available directly in front of the hotel on the street, but only a relatively small number. These are regular street parking lots without special surveillance. Those who want to park their car in a dry place with camera surveillance can use the hotel’s underground car park for a fee of 25.00 EUR per night and vehicle.

Public transportation:

The Eurostars Grand Central hotel is very well connected to the public transport system. A few steps from the hotel entrance you will find the tramway station “Hackerbrücke”. A few steps further, there is the urban rail station “Hackerbrücke”, which offers a fast and direct connection to the city centre (Main Station, Marienplatz).

Directly in front of the hotel is a cab stand, so you can directly hop in a taxi after leaving the hotel. Also, the Central Bus Station (ZOB) is around the corner offering national and international long-distance connections. For all of you who are not afraid of a short walk, you can reach both the main station and the old town on foot. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to the main station (north entrance) and about 25 minutes to the old town. From the hotel, it is also possible (and recommended) to reach the Oktoberfest grounds on foot. A short 15-minute walk will bring you there.

The district around the hotel:

The hotel is located in the Neuhausen district, or rather in the eastern part of Neuhausen district. The city quarter around the hotel is upscale. There are more hotels along the Arnulfstraße. North of the hotel, practically directly opposite, there are tax offices and authorities. Directly south of the hotel there is the city quarter called “Arnulfpark”, a quite new, upscale residential area in which also renowned company-offices like Google or PriceWaterhouseCoopers are located.

Lunch and quick bites

The Central Bus Station (ZOB) is located near the hotel (about five minutes’ walk). There you will find fast food options (Mc Donalds, Oliva (Turkish & Doner Kebab), Pommesfreunde (Belgian fries), KraTae (Thai/Asian), a German bakery a Turkish bakery and an Italian café.

Traditional Bavarian & Dinner options

A bit further up Arnulfstraße, directly opposite the ZOB is the Augustinerkeller. This traditional Bavarian restaurant offers everything the heart desires for fans of Bavarian cuisine. In addition, there is a huge beer garden, which invites you to stop in for a beer with spare ribs or roasted chicken in summer. Those who would like to try different things can explore the area around the hotel. In the Arnulfpark quarter, just behind the hotel, there are a couple of restaurants, but they are more focused on lunch for the surrounding offices. You can also take the tramway to the city centre. Around the historic centre there are countless restaurants.

My tip: If you walk 10-15 minutes straight north, you will find yourself at Nymphenburger Street/Maillingerst.. Here you will also have plenty of options for dinner and lunch.

Supermarkets

There is a discount supermarket (LIDL) and a convenience store (U-store) directly in the ZOB. A little further away, but still within a 10-minute walk, is the Hopfenpost, a former post office building, which now houses a number of doctors, offices, and supermarkets (ALDI, REWE, Denn’s, Rossmann).

Going out:

  • The club or discotheque “Neuraum” is located directly in the ZOB. International DJs regularly perform here. Since the club is divided into several areas, several music genres are offered (EDM, RnB, Charts, German Schlager). For more information see https://neuraum.de/
  • There are few bars in walking distance around the hotel. Only the Pappasitos, a Mexican restaurant, which also has a fairly large bar area, is worth to be mentioned. More bars can be found either in the city centre or in Neuhausen, along Nymphenburger Street as well as around the Rotkreuzplatz. You can walk there within 20 minutes.

Searching for the ideal accommodation in a major city like Munich can be overwhelming. Countless online travel agencies (OTAs) and booking platforms bombard you with offers and so-called deals. But how do you really find the hotel that perfectly matches your needs and travel style?

Here are my 6 best insider tips to help you make the right choice when booking your next Munich hotel and maximize your stay in Bavaria’s vibrant capital.

1. "Central" is Relative: Define YOUR City Center!

You’ve probably seen triggering headlines like “Stay in a centrally located hotel in Munich during Oktoberfest for just XX €”. But what does “central” really mean in Munich?

While Munich isn’t a global megacity like New York, Tokyo or London, the definition of “city center” here is also quite broad. Many hotels claim to be “central” as long as they’re located within the Mittlerer Ring (a major ring road). However, from there it can still take 20-30 minutes by public transport to reach Marienplatz, or a full hour on foot. That’s not what I and most travelers understand as “central”!

My Tips:
Don’t blindly trust the word “central”. Instead:

  • Use maps and distance filters: Nearly all booking platforms today (Booking.com, Expedia, etc.) offer the ability to filter by distance to a specific point of interest (POI) or address. Enter Marienplatz, the main train station, or your primary destination (e.g., German Museum) and set a maximum distance of 1-2 km (0.6 – 1.25 mi).
  • Focus on the key districts: For a truly central location with easy access to top attractions, search specifically in the neighborhoods of Altstadt-Lehel (historic center), Maxvorstadt (west/northwest of the Old Town, university quarter), or the area around the main train station (optimal public transport connections).
  • Check public transport connections: If a hotel isn’t right in the center, proximity to a U-Bahn (subway) station is crucial. Munich’s public transport system is excellent. Use digital maps to check the actual travel time to Marienplatz or the main station from your hotel.

2. Don’t Be Fooled by "Near Munich"

Hotels on the city outskirts or in surrounding towns are often advertised as “near Munich”. While this may be true on a map, the time it takes to reach the city center can significantly impact your stay.

My Tips:

  • S-Bahn (urban rail) is golden: Specifically search for hotels near an S-Bahn station. Munich’s S-Bahn network quickly connects the surrounding areas to the city center. But if you book outside the city center, ensure your stay is within a -minute walk of an S-Bahn station. It doesn’t make sense to walk for 20 minutes through a suburb to reacht the station just to ride the urban rail for another 20 minutes.
  • Digital Maps are your friend: Before booking, plan the route from the hotel address to Marienplatz or your desired destination in the city center. Check travel time using public transport. This gives you a realistic picture of your commute.
  • Be cautious with short trips: If you only have a few days in Munich, every minute counts. A hotel an hour away from the center eats up valuable sightseeing time. However, for longer stays or if you have a rental car, a location outside the center might offer advantages (price, parking).
  • Double check if a 30 Euro/35 USD cheaper hotel that is not inside the city is worth the time consumed by taking public transport or a rental car to the city center.

3. Create Your Wishlist BEFORE Searching: Avoid Hotel Search Overload!

The sheer volume of hotel offers can lead to “search fatigue”. You spend hours looking for the perhaps slightly cheaper, more central, or nicer hotel and lose sight of what really matters.

  • Create a “Bucket List”: Quickly scroll through the remaining hotels. Look at photos and initial reviews (but don’t deep-dive). Create a short list (max 5-7) of hotels that look interesting at first glance. Only then dive deeper into detailed reviews and comparisons. This saves time and sanity!

4. Discover Local Hotel Gems!

Especially international travelers tend to stick with well-known hotel chains like Marriott, Hilton, IHG, or Accor that they know from home. But Munich has an incredibly diverse hotel landscape.

  • Munich is safe: This is important to know upfront: Munich is one of the safest major cities in the world. “No-go zones” as you might know them from other metropolises simply don’t exist here. Even neighborhoods not considered “upscale” are absolutely safe and welcoming.
  • Still: Your comfort factor matters: Each neighborhood has its own character and atmosphere.
    • Maxvorstadt/Schwabing: Vibrant, student-oriented, many cafés, galleries, green spaces.
    • Glockenbachviertel/Isarvorstadt: Hip, alternative, many bars, restaurants, LGBTQ+ friendly.
    • Haidhausen/Au: Charming, village-like, with beautiful old buildings and small shops.
    • Bahnhofsviertel (Main Station District): Central and excellently connected, but it gets lively in the evenings.

  • Check exact room size and bed configuration. Be aware that European beds can be smaller than for example in the USA.
  • Check breakfast hours and extra costs (additional tourist  tax, parking fees).
  • Look for direct booking perks (fast wifi, breakfast, late checkout) — hotels often match or beat OTA rates if you contact them directly.

If you are planning to travel to Munich and have never been there before, you will certainly have a visit to the beer garden at the top of your to-do list. Beer gardens are part of the Bavarian heritage and there are many really beautiful beer gardens in Munich. From beer gardens that are neatly hidden and not easy to reach, to beer gardens that are primarily visited by tourists, beer gardens that are trendy and cool, or simple beer gardens used by local residents. You can quickly lose the overview here. That’s why I have put together the biggest Munich beer gardens.

1. Augustiner Keller Beer Garden

The Augustiner Keller Biergarten, which is usually only called “Augustiner Biergarten” by locals, is probably one of the most famous and oldest beer gardens in Munich. It was first mentioned in 1812 and since then has existed in almost unchanged form in the same place. It is popular with young and old but also visited by a large number of tourists due to its central location close to the main train station and the city centre.
It is also only a 15-minute walk from the Oktoberfest festival grounds.
This strategically perfect location makes it always very crowded on nice days and especially during Oktoberfest.

How big is the beer garden?

The Augustiner Keller beer garden is one of the largest beer gardens in Munich. Here you can get lost if you want to get back from the bar to your table, where family or friends are already waiting for their beer, which you usually get yourself.
The beer garden has a total of over 5.000 seats. But these seats can get really full and you have to search for free seats or sit down with other people.

The Löwenbräukeller-Biergarten is very popular with locals and especially business people, who come here on beautiful summer days for lunch or after work for a beer. Some tourists also come here, although they are more likely to flock to the historic building and settle there.

This beer garden is also perfectly located strategically, as it is only a short distance from the main train station and the city centre. In addition, there is an underground station of the U1 line and a tram station directly in front of the main entrance.

Throughout the year there are some special events at the Löwenbräukeller. Examples are NYE-Party, Carnival, Strong-Beer-Festival or an After-Oktoberfest-Club where the Löwenbräukeller changes to a Club after the Oktoberfest closes.

How big is the beer garden?

The beer garden is probably one of the smaller beer gardens, as it is only about 50 meters (165 ft.) long and about 20 meters (65 ft.) wide. If you subtract the served area, the traditional beer garden has a length of about 30 meters (100 ft.). Correspondingly few seats are available. I myself estimate the beer garden (without the served area) at about 500 seats.

The Löwnebräukeller-Biergarten is usually visited by younger people, especially after work, to ring in the end of the day with friends and colleagues and have a beer and a bite to eat together. Every now and then you also see tourists, as long as they are not distracted by the impressive building of the Löwenbräukeller and its Bräustüberl (traditional restaurant) 😉
You will find less families as the beer garden is located right next to a main street and there is no playground at the beer garden.

Surrounding the beer garden is a spacious park—nearly 40 hectares with old trees, playgrounds, meadows, and a two-hectare deer enclosure where visitors can watch deer roam quietly. This is especially fun for children. And this feature gives the beer garden its name. Until the 1960s deer wandered around freely through the beer garden and of course were fed by the guests. As this is not ideal neither for the deer nor the guests, they were enclosed. Today, you can buy specific food for the animals at vending machines and feed them by hand. Big fun for the small ones.

In summer 2020 I had the opportunity to test the Steigenberger Munich Hotel. Because of the Covid-19 lockdown and the almost complete breakdown of the travel business, I was able to get a very good rate for an overnight stay. Of course I took advantage of this immediately. So here is my in-depth review of Steigenberger Hotel Munich.
Note: I’m testing hotels in Munich myself (I pay for it myself) and I’m not invited by the hotels. The reviews are therefore not a paid advertisement but honest opinions. At the end of this website, you can book the hotel through an affiliate link or affiliate search tool.

Location

The hotel is located in the northern part of the city district „Schwabing“ at the so-called „Mittlerer Ring“, an expressway that surrounds the city centre.

The quarter where the hotel is located consists mainly of residential buildings and a few offices. It is a quiet and safe quarter with some shopping facilities. Only a stone’s throw away are the renowned new buildings of the so-called „Schwabinger Tor“, a wealthy residential and office complex, which also houses the luxurious 5-star Andaz Munich Hotel. In addition, the quarter also houses the star gourmet restaurant „Tantris“. Especially the connection to Munich Airport via the Autobahn, the subway and the Luftahnsa ExpressBus (learn here about the Lufthansa Express Bus and how to use it) make the hotel an ideal starting point to discover Munich.

Public Transport & Getting there

The hotel is quite well connected to public transport. Within walking distance there is a tram stop („Am Münchner Tor“), as well as a subway stop („Nordfriedhof“). The tram takes you to the pulsating heart of Schwabing, the „Münchner Freiheit“ square. Unfortunately the tram does not go any further and you have to change there. However, since Münchner Freiheit is a real hub, you can take the subway there, which takes you directly to the city center or to sights like the Allianz Arena, the Olympic Center or the BMW World.

If you wish to get into the city centre without changing trains, I recommend walking a few minutes longer to the subway station „Nordfriedhof“ (Northern Cemetery).

Right at the station „Nordfriedhof“ there is also the bus stop for the „Lufthansa ExpressBus“. This bus takes you directly and without any further stops to Munich International Airport. For those of you who haven’t heard of the Lufthansa ExpressBus yet, I recommend reading the article „Lufthansa ExpressBus“.

In case you arrive with a (rental) car, there is always the question of a parking space.

There are two options here to park your car. Either you park your car in the streets around the hotel (free) or use the hotel’s underground car park (for a fee of 29.00 EUR / ~34 USD / ~25 GBP / ~47 AUD as of 2026).

For the review I arrived by car. In advance I could already see on the hotel website that the daily fee will be charged for the underground parking. To be honest, I think this is a bit too expensive, especially because it is a safe residential area. But as a local I already know that in Munich’s residential areas, there are often problems with free parking spaces, as many residents also park their cars there.

And indeed – when I arrived, every parking space in the streets around the hotel was occupied. But I was lucky and one of the residents left his parking-space right in front of the hotel, so that I could immediately take it. I think that Steigenberger could get a lot of karma points if the parking garage would be offered at a lower cost.

Lobby & Lounge

You enter the Steigenberger Munich through a revolving door and immediately find yourself in the large lobby with seating and the elevators to the rooms. The reception is located in a separate area to the right of the entrance. In the lobby, large leather couches invite you to relax. Behind the elevators you will find the entrance to the restaurants and the bar. During the summer months, you can also sit down outside (terrace).

In my case due to the Covid-19-pandemic the terrace was closed. The check-in was very pleasant. As the Covid-related lockdown was not long gone, the hotel was practically empty. It looked like I was the only guest (which of course was not true). A very polite young man assigned my room and apologized many times that I had to give additional information about my stay on an additional slip of paper due to the Bavarian Covid rules (in case of an outbreak in the hotel, the hotel would contact you via cellphone).

I was given a room on the fifth floor. I booked a „Superior Plus Double” room which differs from the „Superior Double” rooms in that they are located on the top two floors and are slightly larger.

The corridors of the hotel were very impressive in grey and silver and on the walls you could see 3D-prints of Munich sights, for example the Bavaria statue or the iconic Church of Our Lady.

Rooms

The Superior Plus Double Room was located on the fifth and thus highest floor of the Steigenberger München.
Through the pretty, central glass lift, you can travel from the lobby to the particular floor. When entering the room the enormous size was immediately noticeable. It was a corner room, which is designed to fit the shape of the building. Compared to the other rooms of this category, the corner rooms offer a very nice room layout, which I enjoyed a lot.
The living and sleeping area was located in the righthand part of the room with a view of the Highlight Towers (high-rise building complex) and the Mittlerer Ring (expressway). The entire room was nicely designed in brown and grey tones. There was also a wooden floor (laminated I think).

In the left part of the room was the bathroom with shower and two sinks. The bathroom was very spacious with a huge mirror. Everything you needed was available. Towels in three sizes, a good hair dryer, and cosmetic tissues. However, an amenity kit was not provided. Hand soap, shower gel and shampoo were provided in bulk dispensers.

The shower and toilet had a very modern design. However, I liked the shower the most. It was a rain shower with an additional showerhead. The temperature and also whether the water should come over the rain shower or over the showerhead could be adjusted with buttons that almost look similar to an elevator. The water temperature was indicated by a LED display. Shampoo and shower gel were also provided from a bulk dispenser.

In total, the bathroom was very nice, and also the rain shower was very pleasant. I liked the indirect illumination and the modern shower. But what I particularly liked about this bathroom was that the floor-to-ceiling window front also covered the bathroom. Of course, you can use a curtain if you need some more privacy.

Bedroom/living room

The bed as well as a generous seating area with two chairs and a table, as well as a fairly large desk was located in the right-hand area of the room. Here, as well, were floor-length windows, which could be darkened with curtains, but also with outside sunblinds. Thus the view was spectacular. The bed was aligned in an east-west direction and it was theoretically possible to watch the sunrise from the bed, as long as another hotel wing would not block the horizon.

There was also a large smart TV with many German, but also other programs, especially anglophone news channels as well as French and Chinese TV channels.
The special thing about the Smart-TV was, however, that you also get a lot of information about the hotel and its services. I especially liked the digital pillow menu. Unfortunately, I found out that this could only be viewed in German language. I did not request a special pillow, but I really liked the fact that I could theoretically get a horsehair pillow or a spelt-lavender
Other features
Since the room was very large, there was also a relatively large entrance area where you could store your suitcase, shoes and wardrobe. I rarely had a room where you had so many storage spaces, cupboards and drawers for your clothes. Here the designers really tried hard to get as much out of the room as possible and they did.

Room Equipment

In the room, there was also a coffee making facility as well as see-through a fridge. You could either prepare hot water for instant coffee or tea in the kettle or use the Nespresso machine (Nespresso Pixie) which was also available. Two Nespresso coffee capsules (type ristretto) were provided free of charge. A bottle of mineral water (glass bottle, brand Staatl. Fachingen) was provided free of charge in the refrigerator.

Wellness & Spa facilities

The Steigenberger has a pretty large wellness area. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic this area was only accessible for a certain number of people. I had a short look at the wellness area, but I could not take any pictures, because there were some guests present. On the official website you can find some photos of the wellness area:

Restaurant & Breakfast

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, all restaurant and bar facilities in the Steigenberger Munich were closed. So I could not test the breakfast nor the bar with its famous „beer-crystal“, a huge yellow illuminated refridgerator in the middle of the bar area. The bar offers many different tyoes and brands of beer from all over the world.

Conclusion

Overall, the Steigenberger Munich is an impressive hotel of the 4- or 5-star class. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I could not try out all the possibilities the hotel offers.
I recommend this hotel for business travelers, but also for couples who have been to Munich before and would like to explore other parts of the city that may not be that central. For families and travelers who want to be as central as possible or only have a limited time in Munich, I would not recommend the hotel, because there is simply too much time lost to get to the tourist attractions (downtown).
