If you spend your vacation time in Munich or the Bavarian Alps, you’ll read and hear one word again and again: “Gemütlichkeit.” (gaeh-muet-lech-kite). Bavarians often use it in context with hospitality. Literally translated it means “cosiness”, but there’s way more to it.

Gemütlichkeit describes a very complex to describe feeling – it is a warm, comfortable, relaxed atmosphere in which people feel at ease and connected to each other.

Interestingly, the relaxed atmosphere doesn’t mean it is a calm and quiet atmosphere. Gemütlichkeit can also spark at a music festival or the Oktoberfest.

The word comes from Gemüt, an old German term for mind, soul or emotional disposition. It is then combined with the suffixes -lich and keit. This combined suffix is similar to the Engtlish “-ness”. So Gemütlichkeit is something like “soulfulness” or “the quality of having a good heart.” It refers to (but not only) to physical coziness (like a soft blanket or a warm chair next to a fireplace on a calm winter morning) but also to an inner and social state: a sense of belonging, calm and unhurried togetherness. As mentioned, this can also happen at Oktoberfest or other venues, when you interact with people you like. You have a good time, sitting at a table, having drinks, chatting and singing together with the music.

That’s exactly why it’s so hard to translate. In English, you can say “cosy,” “homely” or “convivial,” but each captures only a part of the whole picture. Bavarian Gemütlichkeit is a mood, a way of being – and the Locals in Bavaria as well as the Austrians simply gave it its own name.

It’s shared with family, friends or the people sitting at the next table at Oktoberfest.

Good food and drink – A Maß of beer, a Brotzeit board (Bavarian Charcuterie board), a slice of cake with a cup of coffee in the afternoon on a sunny terrace, a warming soup at a Christmas Market.

No rush – Time seems to slow down. Nobody is checking the clock.

Warmth – Both physiical and emotional (a sunlit terrace, a fireplace, a wooden hut, a cozy couch…) .

Tradition – Familiar rituals, songs, clothing and places reconnecting people to their roots.

Nature – Mountains, lakes, meadows and clean air can set the scene for Gemütlichkeit, but also a regulars table in a traditional Restaurant is possible.

Put alle these things together and you get that unmistakable Bavarian feeling: relaxed, heartfelt and completely unpretentious.

You don’t have to be Bavarian or German to feel Gemütlichkeit – just follow these steps, but keep in mind, this is not a checklist and at the end you will have Bavarian Gemütlichkeit. These are therefore mor like tips to ‘produce’ Gemütlichkeit in and around you.

Slow down. This is a very impoortant part of it. Gemütlichkeit cannot be rushed. Sit down, stay for a second drink and let the afternoon pass without a plan. In a restaurant, café or a beer garden, take a deep breath, do not think about what you’re going to do next. Just sit there, enjoyx your surrounding and watch people going by. Meditative, isn’t it?

Sit communally. In beer gardens, sharing a long table with strangers is completely normal – and often the best part.

Leave your phone in your pocket. Gemütlichkeit is about being present. Conversations matter more than photos, messages or letting your followers know where you are and what you do.

Come hungry. Brotzeit, Schnitzel, Kaiserschmarrn and coffee with a cake are all essential components. Gemütlichkeit and food are very good companions.

Bavarian Gemütlichkeit is more than a word – it’s a feeling or even more a whole philosophy of everyday life. It says that time is best spent with others, that good food and drink should be shared, and that there is real value in simply slowing down and having conversations (not small talk – real conversations) with other people.

You’ll find it in the clinking of beer glasses under a chestnut tree, in the steam rising from a bowl of hot soup in a mountain hut, and in the impressive scenery of the Bavarian Mountains, lakes, parks, castles and palaces. Once you’ve experienced it, you’ll understand why Bavarians guard this feeling so dearly.

So next time you’re in Munich, don’t just see the sights – take an afternoon to be gemütlich.
Let’s start with the most famous example. In Germany, your mobile phone is called a Handy. Ask a German where their Handy is, and they’ll point to their smartphone.
